To understand the potential benefits of a browlift, look in a mirror and place your palms above the eyebrows at the side of your forehead. Browlift surgery can be performed in several ways, depending on factors such as the position of your hairline and eyebrows. An ‘open’ browlift involves an incision behind the hairline across the top of the head. An ‘endoscopic’ browlift involves 2-4 small incisions behind the hairline and the use of camera technology underneath the forehead. Excess tissue under the skin may be removed and small muscles that create wrinkles in the forehead are weakened or removed, as necessary. The eyebrows are then elevated and fixed into a permanent higher position, resulting in tightening of the forehead skin.

The procedure takes place in a fully-accredited hospital in Perth, administered under general anaesthesia. Depending on your overall health and the complexity of the surgery, it can be performed either as a day procedure or with a brief hospital stay.

You will need to attend a post-operative consultation approximately 5-7 days after browlift surgery, and again 7-14 days after surgery with subsequent post-op visits if required.

Specific risks related to browlift surgery include, but are not limited to:

• Temporary numbness: This is also a common side effect and will usually go away within a few months. However, in rare cases, the numbness may be permanent.
• Intense itchiness: This can occur as the nerves heal and usually goes away on its own within a few months.
• No movement or poor movement of the forehead muscles: In rare cases, permanent injury to the nerves that control eyebrow movement can result in asymmetry of the eyebrows. Revisional surgery may be necessary.
• Raising of the hairline: This is a common side effect and is usually not noticeable.
• Temporary hair loss: This is a common side effect and is usually temporary.
• Hair thinning or loss next to the line of incision: This is a rare side effect and may require revisional surgery.

While your surgeon will take great care to minimise their visibility, it’s important to understand that scars are an unavoidable outcome of any surgical procedure. Following a browlift, the scars are generally along the hairline, natural skin lines and creases. For example, an incision made in the hairline will be less noticeable than an incision made in the skin. If you have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, it’s essential to inform your surgeon about this tendency before the procedure.

A post-operative care plan will be discussed with you before and after the procedure. Returning to work and your normal activities is an individual matter, and your Specialist Plastic Surgeon will advise you. Most patients feel well enough to resume to normal activities in a few days, but it is important not to smoke, undertake strenuous activity or consume large amounts of alcohol during the healing period. Most patients are able to return to work within 1-2 weeks.

It’s essential to highlight that each patient’s recovery process requires sufficient time, support, and proper postoperative care. Healing abilities and pain tolerance may vary among individuals, resulting in differences in recovery duration and the ability to engage in various activities.

Your Specialist Plastic Surgeon will provide an indication of the likely costs, such as your surgeon’s fee, anaesthetist’s fees and hospital and theatre fees. Your surgeon’s fee includes all post-operative care and nurse dressings. Pricing will vary from case to case, but an indicative range of your surgeon’s fee is $3,000 to $4,000 excluding GST.
